FAQ's

What are Captain Jon’s qualifications?

Jonathan E. Bloom is a U.S. Coast Guard licensed Master of inspected vessels to 50 tons and uninspected vessels to 100 tons on inland waters.  He holds an instructor certification with American Sailing Association for Basic Keel Boat and teaches with affiliated S.F. Bay schools.  He has raced and chartered motor and sailing yachts off-shore from the Canadian Gulf Islands to Ensenada Mexico.

Will we see any wildlife?

The Bay and Delta have lots of birds, mammals and fish that are likely to be encountered along the way.  We will be sure to point them out.

Will I get sea sick?

Most people do fine on the water as long as they remain on deck with the wind in their face.  Rich meals the night before or heavy alcohol consumption will make one more prone to motion sickness.  Show up rested and hydrated and you’ll have good time.

Will my children be safe?

Most kids from about age 5 are more agile and sure footed than adults.  They’ll wear a flotation device and be asked to move about with specific instruction.  My own kids have never fallen off a boat, however they have fallen off the dock by not paying attention.  Please watch them closely going to and from the boat.

Can we learn to sail while under way?

It will take longer than an afternoon to learn, but Capt. Jon is always happy to turn over the helm and provide tips or instruction at no additional charge.  Call it an intro to sailing.  This is often the first step toward learning how to sail.

Can the sail boat tip over?
NO.  Half the total weight of the boat is a lead bulb keel that keeps this from happening.  It will "heel" (lean about 20 degrees) but then it firms up and doesn't go any further.

How flexible are you with the itinerary?
Absolutely flexible.  I am at your disposal to ensure a good time.  There is more to see and experience than what is possible in four hours.  Before getting under way, we'll talk about your objectives and needs for the day.

Do you provide narration?
Yes.  As much or little as you like.  Some people like factoids and others just want to soak up the sights, sounds and smells without background chatter.
